Step 1: Download the Report and Clear Listings
First things first: you need the right file. While you could use a blank inventory file, the Category Listing Report (CLR) is the gold standard here. Why? Because it pre-populates the data already existing in the Amazon catalog for your products.
- Clean it up: Identify the existing child listings you want to group and delete any unrelated products.
It should generally look like this:

All of these “variations” will serve as product titles, which is what you will actually see when you open the document.
Step 2: Create a Parent SKU
Now, you need to create the Parent SKU for your variations. The Parent SKU is strictly for backend organization and linking your products together. You should NOT include product features in the report, as this will trigger an error.

- You can name the SKU whatever makes sense for your internal tracking.
- No UPC needed: Since the parent isn’t a buyable product, it doesn’t require a UPC or a GTIN exemption. Amazon will automatically generate a parent ASIN for it once the file is processed.
- Character limits: Keep an eye on the title! While child titles can be more descriptive, parent titles are limited to 125 characters.
- The Variations section goes from columns F to H. This is where you’ll make most of your edits.

What you have to do:
- Pick a title that works for you.
- Write a distinct SKU for the parent listing
- In Parentage Level (column F), label your new SKU as “Parent” and your existing listings as “Child.”

In column G, you’ll have to enter the SKU of the parent listing of each child, exactly as you typed it.
Meanwhile, you’ll also have to clarify what the difference is between these child listings. The Variation Theme (column H) tells Amazon how these products differ. Are they different colors? Different sizes? Or both?
Be specific: Once the theme is set, you must fill out the corresponding attribute for each child.
