Amazon Prime Air drone delivery is expanding quickly. Amazon plans to bring the service to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, up from 11 current delivery locations. The company says the expansion could bring drone delivery to communities with tens of millions of customers.
The service is designed for small, eligible orders that can be delivered directly from Amazon facilities to a customer’s chosen delivery point.

Amazon Is Expanding Prime Air
Prime Air currently operates from 11 locations across 10 U.S. metro areas, including Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Omaha, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Waco.
Amazon plans to launch in five additional metro areas:
- Chicago, Illinois
- Syracuse, New York
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Boise, Idaho
Amazon also recently launched Prime Air in Darlington, England, marking the first time the service has been offered outside the United States.
What Can Amazon Deliver by Drone?
Prime Air focuses on smaller products that customers may need quickly.
Eligible items generally need to weigh 5 pounds or less and fit inside a large shoebox. Amazon says more than 60% of the items customers frequently purchase meet these requirements.
Eligible products can include:
- Groceries
- Cosmetics
- Medications
- Electronics
- Household products
- Chargers and accessories
Amazon says orders can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, although most deliveries currently arrive in around 60 minutes.
For sellers, that creates an interesting question. Products that solve an immediate need can become more attractive when customers know they can receive them within an hour.
Speed Could Change Buying Habits
Fast delivery affects how shoppers decide where to buy everyday products. That puts more pressure on sellers to keep eligible products available in the right locations.
Prime Air is still limited by geography, inventory availability, and product size. No one should assume that every ASIN will become eligible for drone delivery as the program expands.
What Sellers Should Watch
There is no immediate action required for most sellers. The program is still expanding, so the useful step is monitoring how Amazon develops it.
Pay attention to:
- Product categories: Watch which types of products are frequently eligible for Prime Air.
- Inventory placement: Products need to be available within the service network to support fast delivery.
- Customer demand: Look for products where speed could influence purchasing decisions.
- Geographic expansion: New Prime Air locations could change delivery expectations in additional markets.
Amazon’s broader delivery network already includes Same-Day Delivery, one-hour and three-hour delivery options, and Amazon Now in select markets. Prime Air adds another option for small, time-sensitive purchases.
The Bigger Signal for Amazon Sellers
Prime Air shows where Amazon wants delivery to go. The company is reducing the time between placing an order and receiving it, particularly for products that are small and easy to move through its delivery network.
For sellers, faster delivery can make availability and inventory placement increasingly important. A product that can arrive quickly has a different value proposition from the same product with a two-day or five-day delivery window.
As Prime Air expands, watch the categories and locations Amazon prioritizes. Those changes could offer clues about where fast delivery will matter most.
