Amazon Prime Day Strategy for Advertising: Lead Up, Prime Day, and Lead Out

It’s official! Prime Day 2026 will run from June 23 to 26. This is a four day event which may seem exciting for sellers and buyers alike, but this particular runtime changes how sellers should prepare. Mainly because a strategy built around a two-day event, which might have worked in previous years, will underperform if you apply it to a four day event. Last year, brands learned the hard way. This year, they can prepare accordingly.

This guide breaks down the preparation process into three very well-known phases: Lead Up, Prime Day & Lead Out. If you do things right, you’ll be able to turn Prime Day spikes in sales or visibility into real lasting growth that powers your performance throughout the rest of the year.

Why a Three-Phase Strategy

Two to three weeks before the event, customers search and add products to their wish lists. Meanwhile, your competitors are already increasing spend on their best-performing keywords to improve their chances of winning bids once CPCs rise during Prime Day.

A strategy that covers only the event dates misses the setup and a crucial follow-through.

The three phases work together. The lead-up builds the audience. Prime Day converts. The lead-out captures what’s left and sets up the rest of the year.

Lead Up (2 to 3 Weeks Before Day 1)

For the Lead Up phase, you have three priorities:

Keyword Preparation

You have to choose the winning keywords that you will bet on during Prime Day. These should be your top-performing keywords and your most important product targeting campaigns before the event starts.

Pull your Search Term Reports from the last 60 days. If you haven’t yet, identify your highest-converting search terms and add them as exact match campaigns now. Exact match campaigns need time. Starting two or three weeks before Prime Day 2026 gives them room to perform later.

Note: Starting weeks before day 1 may not be possible for all sellers, especially since Prime Day usually requires a boost in ad spend if you want to compete. Amazon recommends scaling budgets 3 to 5 days before the event in 20 to 30% increments, giving campaigns time to adjust.

Audience building

For brands with access to DSP, use the lead up period to build retargeting audiences. Create a dedicated Prime Day subpage on your Store before the event and point both your Sponsored Brands campaigns and your lead up traffic there. Treat it as a sales page with your best deals.

  • For smaller brands without a DSP, Sponsored Display targeting your own ASINs can achieve similar results at a lower cost. The goal is the same: build an audience you can retarget during and after the event.

Pricing discipline

Amazon calculates deal eligibility using its own algorithm. Historically, not messing with the price too much was recommended in the month before Prime Day. Now this is more crucial than ever.

Any discounts that you have applied directly to your displayed price will be your floor during Prime Day. And not only can you get yourself out of deal eligibility, but Amazon now displays Price History to all products sold on the platform.

Every customer can now see how your price has changed in the last month, three months, or even a full year. So don’t even consider something similar to price manipulation.

Before Prime Day, you can post other types of discounts that don’t affect your displayed price. Some examples:

  • Buy One Get One
  • Brand Tailored Promotions
  • Coupons
  • Lightning Deals or Best Deals

Prime Day (June 23 to 26)

To understand how audiences will behave during Prime Day 2026 and what you can do about it, we have to look at some data from 2025.

In 2025, Day 1 captured 34% of Sponsored Products sales, down from 55% during the two-day 2024 event. Days 3 and 4 drove 310% and 443% year-over-year growth respectively, clearly because shoppers who had been researching during the first days finally converted.

This means that your budget has to resist the first two days of Prime Day to be competitive by days three and four, when customers actually decide to buy. It’s almost the direct opposite of what happened in Prime Day with the two-day format, where most of the budget was drained in the first half of the first day.

AI automation needs guardrails

The four-day format really makes it crucial that automated campaigns don’t burn through your daily budget before the event’s peak arrives. Take it into account. Turn off some of those automatic campaigns if you feel it’s necessary.

Either way,  you should set explicit daily budget caps on every automated campaign you are running.

A Real Case

One Prime Day, we worked with a toy brand that wanted to be extremely aggressive in the weeks leading up to the event. They approved a high TACoS target, and together we launched a full-funnel strategy that included Streaming TV, DSP, and PPC to build awareness and drive conversions. The strategy was very solid.

But the client wanted to cut spend immediately after the event. We tried explaining to them that this wasn’t a very smart decision. But their minds were set.

Channels like DSP and Streaming TV are designed to build awareness, audiences, and remarketing pools over time. They are not campaigns that typically reach their full potential within a short burst of activity.

While visibility, engagement, and audience growth increased as expected, the short-term TACoS did not meet the expectations because the campaigns had not had enough time to mature.

These channels compound over time. This is crucial. If you cut spend aggressively right after a seasonal period like Prime Day, all the work you did may not even be worth it in the end. That’s why we implement the Lead Out phase.

Lead Out (The Week After June 26)

There are three main actions for the lead out period.

Keep Sponsored Products Running

Hold spend at 50 to 70% of your Prime Day level for at least a week after the event. Sales velocity from Prime Day boosts organic rank. Cutting spend on June 27 gives back the ground you gained.

Deploy Retargeting Actions

Use Sponsored Display or DSP to reach shoppers who visited your listings during Prime Day but did not buy. CPCs are lower than they were during the event, and this is exactly the audience your lead up work was designed to build. This is when that investment pays off.

Capture your new-to-brand data within 48 hours. Pull new-to-brand metrics from your Prime Day campaigns and build retargeting audiences from first-time buyers.

These audiences are your starting point for Prime Big Deal Days in October. Prime Day data can really feed into the second half of the year if you do this right.

Sizing the Strategy to Your Brand

The three-phase framework applies regardless of budget. Smaller brands can run an effective strategy with Sponsored Display for audience building one week before the event, three to five hero SKUs with coupons if Lightning Deals are not an option, and Sponsored Products (not DSP) during lead out.

Established brands with DSP access have more options but also more risk. The toy brand case above is the relevant warning.

Conclusion

For Amazon Prime Day 2026, the strongest results come from preparing before the event. Brands that follow this three-phase approach will be better positioned to maximize Prime Day performance and drive growth long after the event ends.
