Recovering Stranded FBA Inventory Across Marketplaces

Background

A children's product brand selling children's cups and sticker books on Amazon contacted BellaVix to help manage their account.

The brand operated in the Amazon US marketplace. Like many FBA sellers operating at volume, they relied on Amazon's fulfillment network to store and ship inventory on a daily basis.

That reliance created an unexpected problem when Amazon lost a shipment, found it weeks later, and placed it in the wrong country entirely.

PROBLEM

stranded inventory in wrong country

Amazon initially lost a shipment of the brand's inventory. Several weeks later, the platform flagged the units as recovered, but it wasn't clear where the products were.

When Amazon recovers lost inventory, it automatically renames the SKU by appending "Amazon.Found" to the original SKU name. In this case, the recovered units appeared in the brand's stranded inventory dashboard with 11 units available but no active listing to attach them to.

When the team attempted to create a new listing for the recovered units, Seller Central returned the following error:

"SKU entered is already being used in your catalog. Please check your catalog across all stores or enter a different SKU to try again."

Searching the full catalog across all stores showed no trace of the SKU. The conflict existed in the backend, invisible through standard inventory views.

Long story short, the 11 recovered units were sitting stranded in a Mexican warehouse with no clear path to reinstatement.

Summary

  • 11 stranded units successfully recovered and returned to sellable US inventory
  • SKU conflict fully resolved through Seller Support escalation and catalog cleanup
  • ASIN merged with the active US listing, eliminating the need for removal or re-manufacturing

STRATEGY

Escalating Through Seller Support

The team initiated a live chat with Amazon Seller Support, submitting a detailed case description.

Amazon Support located the conflicting SKU inside the brand's Mexico Seller Central account, where it was sitting as an inactive listing under the same ASIN. The SKU had been automatically generated when Amazon found the inventory and routed it to the MX fulfillment center.

The session ran for over an hour. The team worked through several proposed solutions with the support agent:

  • Merging directly into the US active listing was ruled out. Support confirmed that merging is only possible when both SKUs are active, and the Mexico SKU was inactive.
  • Deleting the Mexico SKU was identified as the necessary first step. The team deleted the listing from the MX store catalog, but the error persisted in the US account.
  • Relisting in the US marketplace was attempted but remained blocked due to a system delay.

Luckily, Support confirmed the SKU had been fully cleared from the backend and recommended relisting after a short period of time.

The case was kept open over the weekend, with the support agent assigned to monitor progress and assist with the ASIN merge once the US SKU became active.

The Results

The Units Were Fully Recovered

What began as a simple stranded inventory issue turned into a multi-marketplace backend conflict involving hidden SKU associations, inactive international listings, and system delays. Despite those complications, BellaVix successfully recovered and reinstated all affected inventory

The recovered units were ultimately relisted in the US marketplace and merged back into the brand’s active ASIN after the removal order was issued, restoring the inventory to sellable FBA status.

At the same time, the team resolved the lingering backend SKU conflict tied to the Mexico marketplace, preventing future catalog errors tied to the same recovered inventory process.

Overall the BellaVix Team avoided a much more expensive operational outcome. The brand retained its inventory, preserved the original ASIN structure, and avoided unnecessary production costs for only 11 units that many sellers would have written off entirely.

The listings were finally merged shortly after with no more issues of stranded inventory.

Results overview:

  • 11 stranded FBA units recovered and restored to active US inventory
  • Hidden backend SKU conflict identified and permanently cleared
  • Mexico marketplace listing and catalog associations successfully removed
  • Existing US ASIN preserved without creating duplicate listings or workaround SKUs

Final Thoughts

Amazon's inventory recovery process is usually pretty functional, but only if you take advatage of it. That means pushing through the automated systems and talking with a real Amazon employee. Once you're there, being respectful, bringing evidence into the table and explaining every issue clearly is how you get satisfactory solutions from Amazon Support.

In this case, the error message itself was a dead end without context. Searching the catalog showed nothing. The conflict was invisible until a support agent looked at the Mexico store directly. That is not a problem sellers would think to investigate on their own.

What resolved the case was a structured escalation with a clear description of the issue, the steps already taken, and the specific outcome needed. In the end, the units were recovered, the SKU conflict was cleared, and the inventory was merged.
