Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly Program: How to get the badge

The dangers of climate change are mounting rapidly. Global warming continues to be a severe threat to our environment. The global surface temperature has risen by an average of 0.17 degrees Fahrenheit per decade since 1901. Customers and sellers aim to do their part in protecting our environment – brands aim to create sustainable products, and customers aim to direct their attention and purchasing towards those sustainable products.

But, how can customers know which products are sustainable and which aren’t?

In September 2020, Amazon introduced their Climate Pledge Friendly badge, which strives to help sellers and consumers align on their environmental goals and makes it easier for customers to differentiate sustainable products from those that aren’t.

What is the Climate Pledge Friendly program?

Climate Pledge Friendly is an Amazon certification program, and part of Amazon’s green initiative to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The latter goal is part of The Climate Pledge to meet the Paris Agreement 20 years early.

Amazon partnered with third-party certifications and created its Compact by Design certification. Once your products are eligible for the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, it will show under your product title, and appear on Amazon’s search results, as well as on your product detail page.

How to get the Climate Pledge Friendly Badge

To get the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, your products must be registered with a qualifying certification. Look for a certification that best suits your products and values. Each certification has different requirements and costs associated with them, and you will need to reach out to the certification body directly to apply and become certified.

Climate Pledge Friendly products are identified using automated data updates from certifiers. Once you are certified, you shouldn’t need to make any changes to your product data on Amazon to be included in the Climate Pledge Friendly program.

What is Compact by Design?

Compact by Design is Amazon’s own certification program that focuses on efficient product design and packaging. It requires products to be efficient in shape, concentration, weight, and packaging. As a result, Compact by Design products can help reduce carbon emissions by eliminating excess air and water.

To qualify for Compact by Design, you don’t need to fill out an application or get a qualifying certification. Still, you need to ensure your products have qualifying unit efficiency, are part of the Brand Registry program, and are in one of the eligible categories.

Efficient products have:

  • Less packaging
  • Less air in the container
  • More efficient shape
  • Less weight
  • Waterless technology
  • Concentrated products

How is unit efficiency measured on Amazon?

Amazon uses item package dimensions, item weight, and the number of units to calculate the unit efficiency. Unit is defined as the total amount of product in the container evaluated, and unit efficiency is calculated as (cubed volume per unit) x (weight per unit). This is standardized across a product category, such as fluid ounces in cleaners, loads in laundry detergent, and ounces in coffee.

To determine whether your products have unit efficiency and qualify as Climate Pledge Friendly, check if they pass their relevant unit efficiency threshold.
